Internal Review

Effective internal review and the actions that flow from it should deliver improved educational outcomes and experience for all learners. As highlighted in the Quality Assurance Framework for Education in Malta, the internal review must be an integral part of the School development planning process and guide it by identifying objective/priorities and respective actions.

The School Development Plan needs also to reflect the standards and development priorities emanating from national policies and strategies. Therefore, educational institutions are guided to use the set standards and success criteria to steer their internal evaluation and school development planning. The SDP’s success criteria need not be binding but flexible enough to provide clear guidance as to how one can evaluate the extent to which a standard is being achieved. An effective internal review process needs reliable data collection, thorough analysis and reflection in identifying priority targets.

The DQSE has published the Internal Review Handbook. It is intended to guide schools with using the established National Standards and success criteria to steer their internal evaluation and school development planning.

Internal quality assurance in early childhood education and school education is the responsibility of the respective school. The School Internal Review and Support Unit supports state schools to develop and implement their own internal quality assurance mechanisms. Internal quality assurance of subject teaching is supported and promoted by the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programs. Internal quality assurance of teachers is the responsibility of the Directorate for Education Resources.
